Who Benefits from Custom Seating?
Custom seating is designed for individuals whose medical, positioning, or mobility needs cannot be adequately addressed with specialty rehab wheelchair back supports and cushions.
For many people, standard seating solutions provide the support they need. When those options are no longer effective, custom seating may help improve posture, increase comfort, and support greater independence throughout daily activities.
Our Approach
Every seating and mobility solution begins with a comprehensive clinical evaluation. Our team collaborates with therapists, caregivers, and medical providers to determine whether custom equipment is medically necessary and appropriate. When recommended, we guide individuals through the measurement, insurance authorization, fitting, and delivery process to ensure the equipment meets their unique needs. Upon delivery, our ATP and a technician review the equipment with the individual and their caregivers, provide hands-on education, and answer questions to help everyone feel confident using the new seating system.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can anyone receive a custom wheelchair or seating system?
Not always. Custom wheelchairs and seating systems are considered only after other equipment and positioning options have been explored. Because these solutions are highly specialized, they require a clinical evaluation by a physical or occupational therapist or a physician and documentation of medical necessity before insurance approval can be considered.
Do you work directly with individuals and families?
We primarily work with adults living in care facilities and individuals who qualify through programs such as the Pennsylvania Medicaid Waiver, Community HealthChoices, or private pay arrangements. Referrals often come from therapists, care teams, and other healthcare professionals.
What types of wheelchairs do you provide?
UDS specializes in custom manual wheelchairs, custom power wheelchairs, alternative drive/operation (alternate joysticks, head array, sip and puff, foot, or switch drive etc.) custom seating systems, and positioning solutions for adults with complex mobility needs. We do not provide pediatric wheelchairs or vehicle modifications.
Can I rent a wheelchair before committing to my new rehabilitation equipment?
We do not offer wheelchair rentals or trial periods for custom rehabilitation equipment. Because each wheelchair and seating system is customized to the individual’s specific needs, recommendations are made through a comprehensive evaluation process.
