Four UDS service dogs are receiving their training in an unlikely place: a maximum security prison. The pups, Solomon, Milton, Somerset and Deora, were brought to the Pine Grove state prison in April, where eight carefully screened inmates were waiting to train them as part of an innovative program called “Train, Assist, Inspire, Loyal Service,” or TAILS. UDS implemented the program in 2000 and has since placed dogs with trainers in 13 of Pennsylvania’s 26 state prisons.
The program gives inmates valuable experience and an opportunity to give back to their communities, as well as chance to enjoy the affection and companionship that dogs are so eager to share with their human companions.
